Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC)

The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) is comprised of student-athlete representatives from each of the 17 Bethune-Cookman's Athletic teams. The purpose of the SAAC is to provide student-athletes an opportunity to communicate more effectively with the athletic administration, university administration, coaches, professors, and stafff of Bethune-Cookman University.

Student-Athlete DayNational Student-Athlete Day

Monday April 6th 2009

National Student-Athlete Day recognizes the accomplishments of student-athletes nationwide who excel in the classroom, on the playing fields and in their communities. National Student-Athlete Day was created by the National Consortium for Academics and Sports (NCAS) and the Northeastern University Center for the Study of Sport in Society, with partnership from the NCAA and the National Federation of State High School Associations.

Student-Athlete Advisory Committee Constitution

Mission:  The mission of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) at Bethune-Cookman University is to provide a link between the Student-Athlete, the Athletic Department administration and Bethune-Cookman University administration, as well as provide a system of support for the student-athlete to discuss the issues that are related to the rigidity of Student-Athlete life. The SAAC also provides a link between the Bethune-Cookman University student-athlete to the MEAC office, as well as the NCAA national office regarding legislation and other issues that affect the student-athlete's welfare.

Name:   The name of this student organization shall be known as the student-Athlete Advisory Committee.

Philosophy:  The Bethune-Cookman University SAAC will place high priority on the overall quality of the educational experience and on successful completion of all students' academic programs. We will seek to provide an environment that in which the student-athletes' athletic activities are conducted as an integral part of the student-athletes' overall educational experience. Cultural diversity will be fostered throughout our student-athlete and athletic staff population.

Purpose:  To provide a link of communication between the B-CU athletic department administration, give the opportunity for the exchange of ideas among student-athletes of different sports, all the while helping members further develop leadership skills. To encourage the student-athlete to become more involved in the campus community, as well as the larger community as role models and voice of the student-athlete. This committee will also be assembled to provide insight on the student-athlete experience, encourage academic achievement, promote healthy lifestyles, social responsibility, and offer input on the rules, regulations and policies that affect student-athletes' lives.

Membership:  The membership shall be comprised of selected representatives, one from each team, depending on the size of the team, from each of our 17 varsity intercollegiate teams (track and field and cross country will have only one for men and women teams total). Only active student-athletes enrolled in full time status, and in good academic standing, and attending Bethune-Cookman University for a minimum of one year shall be eligible for active membership. Active membership shall be comprised of board members. Board members are appointed by their respective head coach at the beginning of each academic year. Only one student-athlete per varsity sport may be a board member. If an active member is removed from a team for any reason. His/her term will become automatically terminated. An alternate will be selected by the head coach of that team.

Attendance:  It is the duty of each representative to attend all monthly meetings throughout their term of participation in the SAAC. If a representative cannot attend meetings regularly, the responsibility will be delegated to another teammate.

Officers:   The Bethune-Cookman University SAAC Executive Committee shall consist of the following:

  1.  
    1. President - Head spokesperson for the organization; should preside at all meetings; in-charge of appointing members to standing committees.
    2. Vice-President - Serves as an alternate when the president is unable to perform his/her duties. Assist President with decision making.
    3. Secretary - Is in-charge of taking notes/minutes at each meeting. Shall be responsible for providing information to all SAAC members.
    4. Treasurer - Is responsible for any financial transactions associated with the SAAC.
    5. SAAC Advisor - Oversees overall operation of the SAAC organization

Nominations and elections shall take place during the last meeting of the Spring semester. Office terms are for one year, beginning during the month following elections and ending the month of the election the following year. Officers are eligible for re-election if they are planning on attending the University as a full-time student athlete for another term of one year. If an officer fails to perform his/her duties, a vote will be taken to remove the officer and a new officer will be elected by the board.

Organizational Structure:

A.    The president will preside over the meetings and be spokesperson for the SAAC.

B.     Sub-committees will be constructed at the discretion of the President. The

Following duties should be incorporated into a committee in some way. 

  1. Community Service - Organize all community service projects for the SAAC.
  2. Athlete Services - Organize projects to aid fellow student-athletes.
  3. Campus Relations - Stimulate interaction with the greater B-CU community.
  4.  Spirit - Increase support and sportsmanship at athletic competitions.
  5. Correspondence - Communicate the SAAC's goals to the B-CU community, keep student-athletes informed about the SAAC's activities and make sure all SAAC representatives know about all meetings and important events.

C.  The Committees must be formed at or before the first meeting of each academic year.

D.  Each of the SAAC representatives must serve on at least one committee. 

Committees:  Standing Committees are as follows:

  1. Awards
  2. Freshman Life
  3. Legislation
  4. Student-Athlete Life
  5. Student-Athlete Community Outreach

Awards:  In consultation with the Director of Athletics and the banquet chairperson, the B-CU SAAC shall assist in organizing the end of the year Athletic Department Celebration. The SAAC will assist with:

·         Organize sub-committees at the beginning of the year

·         Help acquiring awards and decide on awardees

·         Pick a menu

·         Secure a speaker

Freshman Life:  To help freshman student-athletes' make the transition to academic and athletic life smoothly. The SAAC will assist with:

·         Helping with problems and answer questions about transitioning from high school to college life.

·         Develop worthwhile programs and orientation activities to help ease freshman student athletes' into student life.

Legislative:  To provide rules education to student-athletes regarding current NCAA and MEAC rules and rule changes. The SAAC will:

·         Review and revise the B-CU SAAC constitution

·         Review new legislation and legislative proposals by both the NCAA and MEAC and to obtain input from student-athletes.

Student-Athlete Life:  To help all student-athletes find and maintain a healthy and successful balance between academics and athletics. The SAAC will:

·         Work with the Academic Coordinator, the Life Skills Coordinator and other members of the athletics department to enhance the quality of life and personal development of the student-athlete.

·         Focus on decision making, skill development, gender relationships, cultural diversity, transition and adjustment issues.

Student-Athlete Community Outreach:  To design and implement appropriate community volunteer/fund-raising activities for the campus and the B-CU community. The program will focus on the B-CU athlete as a role model and provide an opportunity for the student-athlete to give back to the community that support him/her. The SAAC Community Outreach will include involvement in:

·         Fundraising

·         Volunteering

·         Securing speakers for campus and community organizations
