Daytona Beach, Fla. - Head coach Alvin Wyatt, Sr. and his staff went out right after the season and hit the ground running for great student-athletes, and it's paying off as Bethune-Cookman University signed 19 high school seniors to National Letters of Intent on Wednesday. The Wildcats went after some great talent during the off-season, and felt that was the best way to get back to the top of a tough Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC). "We are very excited about this year's class," praised B-CU head coach Alvin Wyatt shortly after 4 p.m. when the final letters of intent were being compiled by the coaching staff. Things start off with the offense that Coach Wyatt is trying to fix immediately with the loss of Jimmie Russell as the quarterback position. The QB duties should be handled nicely by the signing of Ronald Gaudin and Maurice Francois behind center. The two QBs combined for All-State recognition, as well as Francois being a member of the North/South All-Star game in the state of Florida. Also throwing his name into the mix will be Courtney Keith from Eustis, Fla. who compiled over 28 touchdowns his senior season. The running back position could be handled by a slew of returning letterwinners, but a freshman tandem of Morocko Blash (Dublin, Ga.), Miles Harris (Gainesville) and Jonathan Moment (Orlando) are willing to step up at any given time for a chance to show why the B-CU coaching staff has signed these players to national letters of intent. All three have signed NLIs for the Wildcats this season. On the defensive side of things, the `Cats are reloading, as it may seem, as they signed a host of All-State defensive players that include local product D.J. Howard (defensive back) from Spruce Creek High School in nearby Port Orange. Ryan Lewis out of Blanche Ely High School in Fort Lauderdale, as well as Cornelius Wheeler (defensive line) from Mainland High School in Daytona Beach headlines the defensive unit as well.
"While we weren't able to go after as many guys as we would normally have done because of the amount of scholarship lettermen we have returning, we did, in fact, go after some great student-athletes this year," expressed Coach Wyatt. "We were in a position where we were limited in the amount of scholarships we could offer this year, but the ones that signed for us are some very talented ballplayers. I will tell you that we can match our skill players that we have signed today up against anyone in Division I FCS football."
