Jacksonville, Fla. - The Bethune-Cookman University men's golf team charged toward the team championship of the North/South Intercollegiate Classic at the Jacksonville Beach Golf Club but fell a few strokes short of Florida Gulf Coast as it attempted to win consecutive tournaments after claiming the team championship of last week's FAMU Spring Invitational in Tallahassee. The Wildcats began the final round just 10 strokes behind the team leader, but made a steady decline at times on Tuesday on the leader board only to fall 10 strokes short of the Jacksonville Dolphins who finished in second place overall. Wildcat senior Carl Corbin, who carded a one-under par for the tournament, earned a tie for fourth place overall with a 143. That was Corbin's fifth top-five finish of the 2007-08 season. "The guys shot well yesterday, but I am proud of the way they continued to fight until the end today though it wasn't meant to be," said Head Coach Gary Freeman. "We had some tough greens this weekend, and there were a lot of players up here that played well for other teams. We can't have bad holes like we did at times in the second round if we are going to try and win against these teams this weekend." The Wildcats earned their third consecutive top-three team finish after a third place standing at the spring-season opening B-CU Spring Invitational and team victory at the FAMU Spring Invitational. Senior Carl Corbin led the 'Cats for the second time this spring as he finished in a tie for fourth place. He carded a 71 in the first round and a 72 in the second round. Corbin has earned six top-10 finishes this year for the B-CU Wildcats. Sophomore All-America Candidate Willie Mack III finished in a tie for 18th in the individual standings with a six over par score of 72 in the final round and a 150 total for the two round event. He has earned three consecutive top-15 finishes this spring. Mack was the individual medalist a week ago in Tallahassee for the FAMU Spring Invitational where he carded a 70 in the final round.
Dan Venema (Ormond Beach, Fla.) finished in a tie for 18th place alongside Mack with scores of 76-74 and a 36-hole total of 150. He has two top-10 finishes in the 2007-08 season so far. The Wildcats continue their spring season at the Towson Spring Invitational on Mar. 28 in Grasonville, Md. The 'Cats are eagerly awaiting the tournament since they will have two weeks off before traveling north for the first time in the spring season.
