Bethune-Cookman Men's Golf Takes Second Place at Stetson/CFSC Invitational

DeLand, Fla. - Bethune-Cookman University made a hard charge on the final day of competition to take second place at the Stetson/CFSC Invitational at the Victoria Hills Golf Course in nearby DeLand, Fla. on Monday and Tuesday. For Bethune-Cookman, it was their fourth consecutive Top five finish of the year to date.

The Wildcats sat in a tie for fifth place after the first two rounds of play on Monday. Florida Gulf Coast, eventual winners of the tournament, shot an absolute lights-out affair with a team score of 880 (+16). The Wildcats scored a total of 905 (+41).

B-CU's Dan Venema was one of the players on the charge for the Mighty Wildcats as he shot a three-round score of 225 to finish in eighth place with a nine-over par total. Venema finished with rounds of 75 all the way through staying consistent.

USC Upstate's Josh Gallman led all golfers as the individual medalist with a score of 212 (-4) to finish as the only golfer with an under-par advantage.

Also finishing in the Top 10 for the event was sophomore Willie Mack III with a ninth place tying spot with a score of 226 (+10) on rounds of 77, 76 and 73 ... showing his increasing edge each round.

Juan Ronderos also played well for the `Cats with a tie at 17th on a total of 228 (+12), while teammates Carl Corbin and Chris Dunn tied at 19th with a 229 (+13). For Corbin, his 19th place position was the lowest of the 2007 fall campaign after finishing 18th in the first event of the year at the Sea Trail Intercollegiate. However, it was his highest-total score with a 13-over par performance.
 

 

In fact, all Wildcat golfers collected the highest scores of the season, although it was a three-round event.

Stetson, USC Upstate and Rollins rounded out the Top five teams in the tournament.

Florida Gulf Coast's Daniel Mazziotta, Robert Taylor, Michael Hart and Kyle Henderson all finished in the Top five as individual performers. Todd Shagin of Rollins was also in there with a tie at the fourth place spot.

This was the second to last event of the season for the men's team as they will now finish up a strong fall showing at the Savannah State Tiger Invitational on Nov. 13 and 14 in Savannah, Ga.
