Daytona Beach, Fla. - Junior golfer Dan Venema, a native of nearby Ormond Beach, Fla., hit a double-eagle in an inter-squad tournament held on Saturday, Feb. 9 at the Indigo Lakes Golf Club in Daytona Beach, Fla. The double-eagle took place on the Par 5, 11th hole. Venema, a product of Seabreeze High School in Ormond Beach, has been a steady men's player for the Wildcats since his arrival just over two years ago from the Sandcrabs program. As he approached the 11th tee at 4:29 pm local time, he took out his driver and crushed one down the middle of the fairway, and then received a ride from assistant head coach Jack "Cy" McClairen to approach for his next shot. As he hit his next shot, Venema and Coach McClairen both thought the ball had hopped the green and found its way into the bunker behind the hole. "I was originally playing with Carl Corbin, Juan Ronderos and Chris Dunn," explained Venema. "I decided to play with Troy [Coker] because he was by himself. Coach Cy thought the second shot jumped the green, but Troy [Coker] was jumping up and down excited." The second shot took place at exactly 4:32 pm as the ball bounced off the flag stick and dropped right into the hole for the double-eagle. "I was overwhelmed because I didn't think it had a shot of going into the hole, but I guess Troy knew it all the way after it hit the flag," continued Venema. "It was just a great feeling, you know. I don't really know what else to say." The Wildcats will start off the spring season next weekend when they host the annual B-CU Spring Invitational at Indigo Lakes Golf Club on Feb. 23-24 in Daytona Beach, Fla. For more information on the event, please contact B-CU head coach Gary Freeman at (386) 481-2247.
