Princess Anne, Md. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore was powerful in all areas Monday night wiping out visiting Bethune-Cookman University, 64-41 in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference women's basketball game held at the William P. Athletic Hytche Center in Princess Anne, Md. Maryland Eastern Shore (17-10, 10-4) completed a sweep of the Wildcats on Monday evening as they put four players in double-digits scoring to surpass the visitors from Daytona Beach, Fla. April McBride of UMES had a game-high tying 14 points to lead the Hawks as she also pulled in seven rebounds to tie for the lea don the squad in that category as well. UMES led 27-16 at the break behind a strong 8-0 run to end the half. Chena Parker scored three points for the Hawks during the stretch. B-CU (4-22, 1-13 MEAC) had pulled to within three points at 19-16 with 4:27 left in the opening half as freshman guard Demetria Frank connected on a jumper assisted by Rosanna "Shay" Jones. That was the last time the `Cats would light up the scoreboard in the half. In the second half, the Wildcats were unable to hang with an explosion of offense from the homestanding Hawks as UMES jumped to a 10-0 over the course of three minutes as Kristi Veltkamp and Tiffany Reid helped out with five points during the run. That would put the Hawks out to a double-digit lead they would not surrender the rest of the way at 44-24. Freshman forward Sarah Bolden did her best to keep the Wildcats hopes alive, as well as classmate Jasmine Daniels ... but it was just too large of a deficit for the young `Cats to overcome on this night on the road, of all places. Reid and Casey Morton added 12 points for the Hawks, while teammate Parker pushed in 10 points herself. B-CU was led by Bolden's season-high 14-point outburst, as well as senior forward Natasha Ferguson posting her unprecedented 11th double-double of the year. She has now scored in double-figures 17 games on the year.
No other Wildcat player had over six points in the game. South Carolina State serves as the next target for the Wildcats as they do battle with each other on Saturday, Mar. 1 at 2 p.m. inside Moore Gymnasium in Daytona Beach.
