Daytona Beach, Fla. - Bethune-Cookman University women collected a +36 for the weekend, but it was good enough to finish 10 shots ahead of the field for a first place trophy at the annual B-CU Spring Invitational held at the Indigo Lakes Golf Club in Daytona Beach, Fla. The weather was not on anyone's side at the start as torrential rain forced a small stoppage in play on Saturday before eventually becoming a wonderful afternoon in the Volusia County area. The participating teams Fern Grimshaw finished as the tournament medalist by shooting a 147 (74 / 73) with a 3-over par. Three other Wildcats finished in the top 10 of the event. B-CU's fabulous freshman Kim Wong collected back-to-back days of 77 to finish tied for third overall with a 144 which allowed her to finish at 10-over par for the weekend. Fellow Daytona Beach natives Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University finished in second place with 312 and 310 on two days to finish with a +46 for the tournament. They were led by Jocelyn Dunn (+8) and Tara Allen (+10) to finish second and tied for third, respectively. B-CU sophomore Maria Garrido finished in fifth place overall with a total score of 155 (+11), while teammate Becky Dowell collected a score of 156 (+12) in sixth place. B-CU sophomore Maria Urquiola rounded out the tournament roster for the Wildcats in 12th place with a 165 (+21). Fellow Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) school South Carolina State finished in third place with a team score of 671 (+95). Georgetown (Ky.) College ended in fourth place, Hampton in the fifth spot ... and it was The Citadel rounding out the field in the sixth place position.
"This was a good weekend for us," expressed B-CU head coach Gary Freeman. "I really think the girls worked well during the off-season, and it showed here in Daytona Beach. It doesn't hurt starting off the spring season at your home facility, but they weathered the weather--so to speak, and performed well." Bethune-Cookman will have a little time off before taking part in the Treasure Coast Women's Classic in Port St. Lucie, Fla. That event will take place on Mar. 5-6.
