Miami Lakes, Fla. - Bethune-Cookman University finished in fifth place over the weekend in the Ryder Florida Women's Collegiate Challenge in Miami Lakes, Fla. The event was hosted by the University of Miami at Don Shula's Golf Resort, and was held over three days (Mar. 30-Apr.1).

Sitting in fifth place pretty-much the entire weekend, the Wildcats used the play of junior Becky Dowell and sophomore Ebonie Burgess to finish in fifth place when it was "all said and done".

Dowell collected her third top-5 finish of the 2006-07 season as she collected a fourth place overall with a total of 226 over the course of the three-day event. Her scores included rounds of 75, 76 and 75. For Dowell, she upped her season record to 418-198.

Also playing well for the Wildcats was Burgess, as she finished tied with teammate Fern Grimshaw at the 26th position with a total of 236 (+20). Burgess shot 76, 82, 78 for the weekend, while improving to 297-107 for the year in just 16 rounds of golf.

Burgess it now shooting lights-out golf after taking the spring off last year due to family reasons back home in Bermuda.

As for Grimshaw, the injury to her hand doesn't seem to be affecting her as much as it once was as she bounced back in her first tournament in over a month with a 236 pf her own, as previously noted. Grimshaw shot scores of 82, 74 and 80 for the tournament.

The 74 shot on the second day of the event was the lowest round of the year for the sophomore golfer.

Freshman Maria Garrido shot a 241 (t-39th), while fellow freshman Matilda Creime struggled a bit with a score of 242 (+26). Creime's 41st place showing is the lowest of the year for her at Bethune-Cookman University.

The previous lowest performance was a 35th place finish at the NSU Fall Invitational back on Oct. 16-17.

USF took top honors as a team with the first place trophy, shooting a 908 ... 10 strokes ahead of second place competitor Florida Southern. Florida Southern sat in first place after the first two days of the event. Third place was a tie gathered in by UCF and Rollins to round out the top five as B-CU was fifth.

Rollins' Laura Fourdraine and USF's Christina Jones were the top individual performers for the weekend as they each shot a total of 222 (+6). In third place was Florida Southern's Heather Burgner (224), while B-CU's Dowell and Stephanie Connelly (227) of UCF rounded out the medaling performers in the top 5.

The Wildcats won't get back to the links again until Apr. 28 when they travel down to Atlanta, Ga. for the annual Women in Golf Foundation Tournament hosted at the Sugar Creek Gold & Tennis Club. The Wildcats took home top honors for the event last season.
