Tallahassee, Fla. - Bethune-Cookman and Florida A&M gave the fans all they could ask for and more on Saturday as the two teams split a conference twin-billing at the Lady Rattlers Softball Complex in Tallahassee, Fla. FAMU took the first game in extra innings, 4-3. But the Wildcats came back to win the nightcap affair, 6-5.

In Game One, both FAMU and Bethune-Cookman finished with six hits apiece, with the Lady Rattlers leaving six runners on base, while the Wildcats of B-CU left 11 runners on base.

FAMU (12-37, 2-6 MEAC) was paced by Melissa Oliphant with two hits, while B-CU was led by senior first baseman Brandi Holley with two hits.

Oliphant (5-8) got the win for the Lady Rattlers, allowing one hit in three innings of relief, while freshman pitcher Chastity Sanders (2-9) took the loss for the 'Cats ... allowing six hits, two earned runs and striking out five in seven and one-third innings.

B-CU (19-32, 9-2 MEAC) grabbed the early lead, 1-0 in the top of the first on a Holley homer to left field, before FAMU answered in the home-half of the second as both Oliphant and Ashley Smith scored on a Tiffany Chan two-run single, giving the Lady Rattlers a 2-1 lead.

The Lady Rattlers added to their lead in the bottom of the fifth as Shayla Clark scored on a Wildcat infielder's error, making the score at that point 3-1.

B-CU tied the game 3-3 in the top of the sixth inning as freshman catcher Liz Parrish scored on a wild pitch, followed by a Holley RBI single scoring right fielder Tameika Jonas.

FAMU won the game 4-3 in the bottom of the eighth inning as Krista Richardson scored on a Smith RBI single.
 

 

In a Game Two, FAMU tallied 11 hits as Smith, Ashley Jones and Chan finished with two hits each.

B-CU collected nine hits with Holley finishing with a team-high two hits.

Sanders (3-9) picked up the win for the Wildcats, allowing 11 hits, two earned runs and striking out two in seven innings. Meanwhile, FAMU's Oliphant took the loss, allowing four hits, one earned run and striking out one in three innings.

In the top of the second inning, B-CU took a 3-0 lead as freshman Allison Garcia scored on an Anush Mooradian single. Mooradian would score as she later stole home. Jonas would then score on the Sonya Urteaga single.

FAMU picked up a run in the bottom of the second inning as Oliphant scored on a Chan single, cutting B-CU's lead to 3-1.

The Wildcats added to their lead in the top the third inning as Holley scored on a Christina Trimble sacrifice fly to center field, making the score at that point 4-1.

The Lady Rattlers cut B-CU's lead to 4-3 in the bottom of the fourth inning on a Nikki Terryn two-run single, scoring both Chan and Brittany Newby.

A Bussey two-run homer in the top of the sixth inning increased the 'Cats lead to 6-3.

FAMU answered with two runs in the bottom of the seventh on an Oliphant two-run homer for the 6-5 final.

The two teams will conclude their three-game series tomorrow back at the Lady Rattlers Softball Complex in Tallahassee, Fla. Game time is set for a noon first-pitch start.
