Daytona Beach, Fla. - Bethune-Cookman University women's tennis had their nine-match winning streak snapped on Wednesday with a 5-2 loss to the University of North Florida at the City Island Tennis Complex in Daytona Beach, Fla.

UNF (14-6) snapped their three-match losing streak on the day, beginning with collecting the doubles point, taking 2-of-3 from the Wildcats.

B-CU's Olga Ruislova and Kiara Powell picked up the only doubles win with an 8-3 victory over Catalina Castillo and Natalia Sanchez in the No. 1 doubles spot. However, UNF swept the No. 2 and No. 3 positions, including an 8-4 win by the #59 ranked team of Florencia Torres and Ina Durcakova in the No. 2 spot. They knocked off B-CU's Lucia Polakova and Valerie Kendrick.

In singles action, the Ospreys fought past the Wildcats in some of the best tennis action seen at City Island in quite a while.

Kiara Powell of B-CU (19-3) continued her impressive winning streak with a 7-5, 6-1 decision over UNF's Vanessa Sanchez in the No. 3 position. Also picking up a win for the Wildcats was Valerie Kendrick with a great 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 win in three sets over Ina Durcakova at the No. 5 position.

Olga Ruislova of B-CU fell in the No. 1 position to the Ospreys' Catalina Castillo on scores of 7-6 (11-9), 4-6, 7-6 (7-5). Monika Musilova dropped her first decision of the year in the No. 4 decision to Natalia Sanchez on scores of 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.

The Wildcats have been seeded No. 2 already going into the MEAC Tournament which begins in two weeks. This is the second time in as many years that the Wildcats have been selected as the No. 2 seed with a great season record in MEAC play.
 

 

Bethune-Cookman gets back to business next Tuesday, Apr. 10 when they host Jacksonville University on "Senior Appreciation Day" in Daytona Beach at the City Island Tennis Complex. The `Cats will be saying "good-bye" to seniors Valerie Kendrick, Lucia Polakova and Olga Ruislova.
