Daytona Beach, Fla. - Bethune-Cookman women's tennis got off to a strong start this past weekend as they competed in the annual Embry-Riddle Tennis Tournament in Daytona Beach, Fla. The tournament was a round-robin affair held on Sept. 14-16.

B-CU didn't have to travel far to kick-off the new season as seventh-year head coach Trey Bogue and his squad went just down the street to Embry-Riddle for the three-day affair. Participating teams included Florida Southern, Embry-Riddle, some independent players as well as Bethune-Cookman University.

Junior Monika Musilova looked impressive on the first day as she defeated Embry-Riddle's Lindsey Kurtz 6-0, 6-1 before then falling to Florida Southern's Senka Softic 5-7, 6-1, 6-1. In the consolation rounds, Musilova swept past Hana Im of Embry-Riddle on scores of 6-4, 6-2. She also defeated Ashley Hungerford of Florida Southern 6-0, 6-2.

Also looking good in her debut as a Wildcat was freshman Chanetra Brown who knocked off Florida Southern's Amanda Carns 6-4, 7-5. Brown later fell in the semifinals to Embry-Riddle's Marga Rico-Jimenez.

Shaunda Gaiter collected a win in the consolation bracket of Flight "B" with an impressive 6-0, 6-1 victory over Amanda Carns of Florida Southern. Gaiter later fell in the semifinals of the consolation round to Nora Baiertschi of Florida Southern 6-4, 6-4.

In doubles action, Musilova and Jeneice Ward fell to Softic and Baertschi of Florida Southern by default, while Brown and Gaiter lost to Natalie Anaya and Lindsey Kurtz of Embry-Riddle 8-1.
